Heads-Up Display
- Draw on Screen allows you to quickly switch between tools using a circular heads-up display that is accessible with a right click.
- EpicPen does not have a HUD.
Spring-loaded actions
- Draw on Screen allows you to quickly switch between tools without remembering any weird keyboard shortcuts. This reduces cognitive load during presentations so you can focus on what really matters.
- EpicPen selects one tool at a time. Switching to another tool requires either a click on the vertical toolbar or using a keyboard shortcut, which may interact with your currently selected app.
Multi-webcam tool
- Draw on Screen allows you to configure up to 4 webcam sources and toggle between them effortlessly. You can even draw over your webcam in real time. Each webcam preset allows you to specify positioning, height, aspect ratio, margins, border radius, and transparency during pass-through mode.
- EpicPen does not support webcam feeds.
Spotlight tool
- Draw on Screen allows you to create a spotlight around content that needs to grab user's attention. Control the spotlight color (with alpha transparency) and border radius.
- EpicPen does not have a spotlight tool. It has a blackboard/whiteboard - but that covers the entire screen.
Zoom tool
- Draw on Screen allows you to easily zoom in on content by using the mouse wheel. You can control the zoom scale and speed. Intuitively pan while zoomed in with the mouse wheel.
- EpicPen does not have a zoom tool.
Laser tool
- Draw on Screen allows you to draw a fading laser line by simply pressing Shift while swiping. Control the laser color, thickness, thinning, and speed.
- EpicPen does not have a laser tool. The closest thing to this is the "fading ink" setting.
Cursor sizes
- Draw on Screen allows you to customize your cursor size with a single click. The cursor has a very distinctive look so you can easily check when you're in pass-through mode.
- EpicPen does not allow you to change the cursor size or style.
Invisible toolbar
- Draw on Screen allows you to completely hide the toolbar. Set it and forget it.
- EpicPen always shows a toolbar on top of other apps.
Open-source
- Draw on Screen is open source. Import the source code into your favorite IDE and use any large language model to inspect it for "funny business".

Lines and boxes
- With Draw on Screen you can customize the line color, stroke color and fill color (with alpha transparency), and border radius. Drawing a line or a box is as simple as swiping on screen while pressing Ctrl or Ctrl + Shift.
- EpicPen has very limited styling options for lines and other shapes. The line tool must be selected with a click or a shortcut that can interact with your active app.
Pass-through
- Draw on Screen allows you to interact with apps behind your annotations by toggling pass-through mode. This is the one and only shortcut you'll need to remember: Ctrl+Shift+Backspace.
- EpicPen has a hybrid pass-through mode where the cursor tool allows you to interact with apps behind your annotations. But exiting the cursor tool with a keyboard shortcut may trigger other actions in your currently active app.
Text tool
- With Draw on Screen you can customize the text color and stroke color (with alpha transparency), font family, font size, and text justification. Adding text is as simple as double-clicking anywhere on screen. Create an ordered list with Ctrl + double-click.
- EpicPen has very limited styling options for text. The text tool must be selected with a click or a shortcut that can interact with your active app.
